چکیده

Solidification morphology directly impacts the mechanical properties of materials; hence many models of the morphological evolution of dendritic structures have been formulated. However, there is a paucity of validation data for directional solidification models, especially the direct observations of metallic alloys, both for cellular and dendritic structures. In this study, we performed 4D synchrotron X-ray tomographic imaging (three spatial directions plus time), to study the transition from cellular to a columnar dendritic morphology and the subsequent growth of columnar dendrite in a temperature gradient stage. The cellular morphology was found to be highly complex, with frequent lateral bridging. Protrusions growing out of the cellular front with the onset of morphological instabilities were captured, together with the subsequent development of these protrusions into established dendrites. Other mechanisms affecting the solidification microstructure, including dendrite fragmentation/pinch-off were also captured and the quantitative results were compared to proposed mechanisms. The results demonstrate that 4D imaging can provide new data to both inform and validate solidification models. © 2016 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. In Situ and Real-Time Observation of the Solidification Process of Al20mass%Cu Alloy by Synchrotron X-ray Radiography

High brilliance synchrotron X-ray radiography has been used to in situ study the solidification process of Al20mass%Cu alloy with nominal spatial and temporal resolutions of 7.4 μm and 300ms, respectively. The block of favorably oriented dendrites by the unfavorably oriented ones was first observed in metal solidification, which related to solute interaction of neighbor dendrites. Solute inter...

In situ quantification of the nucleation and growth of Fe-rich intermetallics during Al alloy solidification

Real-time in situ synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy was used to gain new insights into and quantify the nucleation mechanisms and growth kinetics of b-Al5FeSi intermetallics during solidification of an aluminium Al–7.5Si–3.5Cu–0.6Fe (wt.%) alloy. Three new insights were obtained. First, the plate-like b-intermetallics appeared to nucleate mainly on or near the primary aluminium dendrites...

X-ray tomographic microscopy analysis of the dendrite orientation transition in Al-Zn

Recently, Gonzales and Rappaz [Met. Mat. Trans. A37:2797, 2006] showed the influence of an increasing zinc content on the growth directions of aluminum dendrites. 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 dendrites were observed below 25wt.% and above 55wt.% zinc, respectively, whereas textured seaweeds and 〈320〉 dendrites were observed at intermediate compositions. Considering the complexity of these structures, it is ...

MODELLING OF THE PERMEABILITY FOR COLUMNAR DENDRITE STRUCTURES DURING SOLIDIFICATION OF MUSHY ALLOYS

A numerical model has been developed for the determination of liquid flow permeability through columnar dendrite during growth. The model is inclusive two stages, first numerical evolution of the dendrite shape during growth, and second numerical determination of the interdendritic liquid permeability. Simulation results shown which solute concentration by evolution of dendrite shape could resu...

Degenerate seaweed to tilted dendrite transition and their growth dynamics in directional solidification of non-axially oriented crystals: a phase-field study

We report the results of a phase-field study of degenerate seaweed to tilted dendrite transition and their growth dynamics during directional solidification of a binary alloy. Morphological selection maps in the planes of (G, Vp) and (ε4, Vp) show that lower pulling velocity, weaker anisotropic strength and higher thermal gradient can enhance the formation of the degenerate seaweed. The tip und...
